Pocket Queries Help needed!

Postby the3beavers » Tue Feb 09, 2010 12:06 am

Hi Ya'll! I'm totally confused with the pocket query process. I've managed to finally figure out how to get some results, by only asking for 50 instead of 500, but after they get sent to my email, it's gibberish. What do I need to download to be able to print it out? I really need 'pocket queries for dummies' instructions, so type your reply slow! LOL It's getting to be a drag to copy and paste the info onto a word document for every cache, so I can have a written copy to carry, and I was hoping this would be the answer to that.
Thanks a bunch! :D

GPX files, like Pocket Queries, are meant to be read by programs and not humans. Gibberish is in the eye of the beholder.

Unless you dream in angle bracket, you probably want to use a program like GSAK or GPSBabel to send that data to your GPS or mapping or another program. GPSBabel's 'text' format writes a format that you can easily pull into a word processor for multi-column or double-sided printing if that's really your goal.

Printing? How quaint. If you're caching in any quantity, I strongly recommend a PDA or a smart phone so you can carry these electronically. Better still, use a GPS that supports cache descriptions such as any of the Garmin units that are named like a state or a Nuvi 500. The Delorme PN-40 supports it, too. I won't pretend those options are cheap, though. You can find a decent low-end PDA for about the cost of an ink jet cartridge.

Hmmm. Most people use PQ's to replace the need to carry around paper printouts - in other words, paperless caching.

For instance, I load the pocket queries I get onto my oregon gps, and all the information is then available on the gps.

Many people use GSAK - (http://www.gsak.net/) to manage PQ's - and you can use it to export the info in a variety of formats and to a variety of devices.

Perhaps if you provided us with some info about your equipment, we could provide some detailed advice?

Edit - Robert and I were typing at the same time. Trala!
